Malcolm held the role of Director of Information Systems Security, GCSB where he was responsible for the national information security programme for New Zealand. On leaving government service, he moved into the telecommunications industry. As Technical Director CES Communications he was responsible for developing embedded cryptography products for satellite and terrestrial communications, and as Technical Director BAE Systems Applied Intelligence he managed the security evaluation, reverse engineering and penetration testing teams.

He held CSO roles at Telecom NZ and NBN Co. His current work as a partner in OutpaceAI in Melbourne involves technical training and consultancy on AI security. He has undertaken security architecture consultancy and training in the UK, Norway, South Africa and the Gulf region as well as across APAC.

Malcolm has represented Australia and New Zealand in cyber security forums internationally, has participated in the ISO and Open Group standards bodies, and has held board roles in both AISA and the SABSA Institute. Malcolm was instrumental in developing and launching the vocational Certificate IV in Cyber Security throughout Australia and is currently an adjunct PhD Supervisor at Deakin University in Melbourne.

He is also the author of numerous online cyber security and programming courses published through Linkedin Learning and Offsec.
