Conference ROI for busy people: A playbook for learning, networking, and bringing back the goods
Simon Gribble draws on his trip to the Las Vegas cyber conference week to show how to get a real return from big events, and when to ask your employer to pay.
Session Details
Global cyber conferences like BSides, Black Hat and DEF CON are often described as “must‑attend” events. They are also expensive, exhausting, and if you’re not deliberate surprisingly easy to waste. This session is a candid, experience‑based look at how to get real return on investment from these international cyber events, whether you’re paying for it yourself or convincing your employer to pick up the bill.
Drawing on first‑hand experience travelling from Australia to Las Vegas in August 2026 for the world’s largest cyber conference week, this talk focuses on outcomes. It covers what I wish I had known before I went (given this was my first time attending these events), what delivered value on the ground, and what I would do very differently next time.
I will explore how to approach large conferences with intent: how to choose between overlapping events, tracks, villages, and hallway conversations; how to balance learning and networking; and how to avoid traps like attending lots of sessions but retaining very little.
There is also practical guidance on capturing insights in a way that survives jet lag and makes it back into your organisation, rather than staying trapped in a notebook you never open again.
A key part of the session looks at conference ROI. When does it make sense to self‑fund as an investment in your own career, and when should you be pitching this as a professional development investment to your employer? I will break down what decision‑makers care about, how to frame the business case, and how to articulate value beyond “I learned some interesting things”.
The session is practical, honest, and designed for cyber professionals who want to learn faster, network better, and come home with more than a badge and a backlog of unread slides. Expect actionable advice, realistic trade‑offs, and a reminder that the best conference ROI often happens outside the conference room - sometimes while standing in a hallway, holding a coffee, wondering how you got talked into a late‑night event the night before.
