Built to survive: Lessons in cyber resilience from nature’s toughest creature

A tardigrade is a tiny, microscopic eight-legged creature often nicknamed the "moss piglet" or "water bear." The names may sound cute, but the organism itself is anything but fragile. According to National Geographic, tardigrades can survive environmental conditions that would destroy almost any other life form. They can go up to 30 years without food or water, endure temperatures close to absolute zero or above boiling, withstand pressures greater than those found in the deepest ocean trenches, and even survive exposure to the vacuum of space.

Their remarkable ability to adapt and endure makes them a powerful metaphor for what organisations should aspire to in the world of cyber resilience.

Cyber resilience is the capability of an organisation to prepare for, withstand, and minimise the impact of significant cyber incidents while continuing to achieve its core business objectives.

However, becoming a figurative "cyber tardigrade" is becoming increasingly difficult. Organisations today face mounting pressure from multiple fronts:
